Volunteering for Girls on the Run as a junior coach has allowed me to personally witness the transformative effects of the program, and it has reaffirmed my belief that girls deserve to be heard and prioritized. As a teenager, I’m aware of and understand the societal pressures of being a girl today, and I’ve seen how this program is starting to change that. The ability for girls to open up and discuss such topics in a safe environment is so important, and Girls on the Run inspires these girls to support each other through those discussions.
GOTR participants are healthy and strong young girls who are proud of their accomplishments, and the GOTR coaches are proud and strong women because they helped their girls achieve this amazing thing. At the Girls on the Run 5K, my peers and I danced and cheered for the girls as they made their laps, and seeing them smile through the run was awesome. I think we had as much fun as they did, just because being able to support our fellow girls was incredibly rewarding. I continue to volunteer with GOTR because the transformation the girls go through is inspirational and fulfilling. It continues to confirm that girls are strong, able, and have the ability to make a difference. – Kate McCollum, Coach
