You rarely see your kids’ eyes glued to the news, but when the snow is coming down and the school closings are being announced, you can guarantee that will get their attention. Sometimes a snow day can be inconvenient, but when you look at the bright side, you can find plenty of things to do both indoors and out with the unexpected family time a snow day can bring.
We all know about sledding, building snowmen, and snowball fights. But once you’ve gotten the little ones bundled up with their boots on (we recommend the Eric Winter Boot from Khombu and the Sporto Snowboard Boot for boys and the Khombu Darcie and Columbia Minx II for girls) there are plenty of other things to do in the outdoors on a snow day.
A fresh layer of snow is a great drawing board. Use a stick to draw a Tic-Tac-Toe board and challenge the kids to a game. You can draw X’s and O’s in the snow or place sticks and pinecones or whatever you have around in the squares to preserve the board for multiple games.
If you have some spare empty spray bottles laying around, you can fill them with water and food coloring and let the kids draw in color on the snow. Unlike with most graffiti, when the snow melts the mess is gone!
When the kids are ready to come in, have them bring in a bucket of fresh snow, in preparation for a great indoor activity.
Making Snow Ice Cream
Once you have a gallon bucket of snow, you’ll need:
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups milk
Simply stir in the sugar and vanilla to taste, then add just enough milk to get the right consistency. Instant ice cream!
Coffee Filter Snowflakes
Making paper snowflakes is a long tradition, but you can change it up a bit by using coffee filters—they’re already pre-cut into circles. Fold in half, then in half again, and have the kids cut out some circles and triangles to make their own unique designs.
There are plenty of things you can do with your kids on snow days, both inside and out. What are some of your favorite snow day activities? Feel free to share in the comments, and be sure to check out our family snow day video below!
